At Rambert, my work ethic and the quality of my movement have developed significantly, and I’m a stronger dancer for it. Graham technique has had a particular impact. It’s very intricate and detailed and has really changed how I understand what the body can do. Every technique adds something I can bring into my own movement, and I’m enjoying putting it into practice.

At the moment I’m exploring my own movement through improvisation. My flexibility gives me an unusual range, and I use it to seek out shapes and transitions that might appear uncomfortable, then work with control to inhabit them with complete ease. However demanding a movement is, I want to feel calm and settled within it. Through this exploration, I can feel my choreographic voice evolving.

This term I’m performing in several new pieces choreographed by fellow students. Alongside our intensive technique training, I’m really enjoying seeing the creative side of my peers. It’s fascinating to see such varied interpretations of what is aesthetic and beautiful. In January, my year group begins working with Akram Khan on his repertoire, and I’m looking forward to an experience close to the working life of a dance company: learning, refining and developing together.

Making SIMZA with Beki Mari in 2025, and dancing in a second film by Ali M. Demirel, due for release soon, broadened my sense of what is possible after graduation. Working with the camera and on set showed me how much dance for camera has to offer, and that the stage takes many forms. Living in England has also made me more conscious of my identity. I’ve come to feel that my Turkish culture and roots are a central part of who I am as a dancer, and I’m curious to explore that further.

In my final year at Rambert I will be auditioning for companies, and after graduating I see myself performing with a company while also creating choreography. But all work excites me now. I feel I shouldn’t stay inside the box, and you never know what opportunities can come up. One day I hope to be in a position to help young dancers who, like me, grew up with limited access to training. Dance, for me, is a language and a way of connecting people, and I’m excited to keep developing my voice as an artist.
